How to Get to Strenči#

Strenči is a small town in Valmiera Municipality best reached via Riga (RIX) followed by an intercity bus to Valmiera and a regional bus or taxi for the last short leg.

By Air

Riga International Airport (RIX): Riga is the main international arrival point for northern Latvia. From RIX travel to Valmiera by intercity bus (about 1.5-2 hours, €5-€10) and then take a local bus or taxi to Strenči (15-30 minutes, €5-€15). For late arrivals a direct taxi from RIX to Strenči is possible but significantly more expensive (roughly €70-€120 depending on route).

-:

By Train & Bus

Train: Strenči is not directly served by Latvia’s passenger rail network. Major rail connections are concentrated in Riga and other regional centres; expect to combine rail to Riga with bus travel.

Bus: Intercity bus services from Riga (Rīgas autoosta) or Valmiera are the usual public transport option. Buses to Valmiera take about 1.5-2 hours from Riga (€5-€10); onward local buses or taxis connect to Strenči in under half an hour.

How to Get Around Strenči#

No rail service-use Riga as the international hub then regional buses or a rental car to reach Strenči. For full flexibility a car is recommended; buses are cheapest but timetables can be limited.

  • Regional bus (€5-€15) - Buses from Riga to Valmiera are regular and economical; from Valmiera take a local bus or taxi to Strenči. Check schedules in advance-services can be less frequent on weekends and public holidays.
  • Taxi / Private transfer (€15-€120) - Taxis provide direct door-to-door service from Valmiera or Riga; useful for early/late arrivals or when carrying luggage. Prices jump for long direct rides from Riga but are reasonable for Valmiera-Strenči hops.
  • Car rental (€35-€70/day) - A rental car from Riga is convenient for exploring the Valmiera region and reaching smaller settlements. Roads are generally in good condition; car gives the most flexibility for riverside and forested areas.
  • Cycling (€0-€10/day (rental)) - The surrounding countryside is suitable for cycling in summer-quiet roads and scenic routes between villages. Be prepared for variable weather and some unpaved sections.
  • Local on-demand services (€3-€20) - In very small towns local taxis or community transport can be the only option outside scheduled bus times-ask locally if there’s an on-demand bus service.
  • Walking - Strenči’s centre is compact and easy to explore on foot; riverfront paths and local trails are pleasant for short walks.
