How to Get to Cēsis
Cēsis is an easy day-trip from Riga via train or bus from Riga Central Station; Riga International Airport (RIX) is the main air gateway. The town is compact and well served by regional public transport.
Riga International Airport (RIX): The nearest major airport for Cēsis. From RIX take bus or shuttle to Riga city centre (about €2-3, 25-30 minutes), then a direct bus or regional train to Cēsis (see card 2). Taxi from RIX to Riga centre is roughly €15-25.
Alternative airports: Some travellers use Tallinn (TLL) and continue by bus/train to Cēsis, but Riga is the most practical single-airport option for Cēsis.
Train: Pasažieru vilciens operates regional trains from Riga to Cēsis with a journey time of about 1-1.5 hours depending on service; fares are typically €2-5. Trains arrive at Cēsis station within walking distance of much of the old town.
Bus: Direct buses from Riga’s central bus station to Cēsis are frequent and take about 1-1.5 hours as well, with fares around €3-6. Buses often stop in town centre locations convenient for hotels and the castle area.
How to Get Around Cēsis #
Cēsis is very walkable - the Old Town and castle complex are close together and best explored on foot. Trains and buses link Cēsis with Riga and other regional towns; fares are modest.
