How to Get to Umm Qais#

Umm Qais is reached most conveniently from Amman’s airports via coach to Irbid followed by a short local taxi or minibus. There is no passenger rail service to the site; expect travel by coach and road transport for the final leg.

By Air

Queen Alia International (AMM): The main international gateway for Jordan. From AMM you can take a Jett or private airport shuttle to Amman city (30-40 minutes, ~3-5 JOD) and then an intercity JETT bus to Irbid (about 2-2.5 hours, typical fare ~6-8 JOD). A direct taxi from AMM to Umm Qais/nearby Irbid is faster (around 1.5-2 hours) but considerably more expensive - expect roughly 60-80 JOD depending on negotiation and traffic.

Amman-Marka (ADJ): A smaller airport close to Amman used mainly for regional and charter flights. From Marka you need to get to central Amman (taxi ~15-25 JOD, 20-30 minutes) then catch a JETT or intercity bus to Irbid; overall travel to Umm Qais is typically 2-3 hours.

By Train & Bus

Train: Jordan has no regular long‑distance passenger rail service; there is no direct train option to Umm Qais.

Bus: Buses and private coaches (JETT and local carriers) are the main public option. The common route is Amman → Irbid by JETT coach (2-2.5 hours, ~6-8 JOD), then local minibuses or shared taxis from Irbid to Umm Qais (30-45 minutes, small fare often under 2 JOD). Local taxis from Irbid to the archaeological site are quicker and cost more (typically a few JOD).

How to Get Around Umm Qais#

The region is best navigated by coach to Irbid then local taxi/minibus or car. For independence and scenic stops, rent a car; otherwise use JETT coaches plus local shared taxis for a budget route.

  • Intercity coach (JETT and private operators) (6-8 JOD) - JETT and private coaches run between Amman and northern Jordan cities such as Irbid. Coaches are comfortable, timed to major departures, and the most reliable public option to reach the region; after Irbid you switch to local minibuses or taxis for the short trip to Umm Qais. Book tickets online for JETT on popular routes.
  • Shared taxis / minibuses (0.5-2 JOD) - Shared minibuses (service taxis) cover short routes around Irbid and to Umm Qais. They are frequent, cheap and drop you close to the ruins, but can be crowded and run on flexible departure times.
  • Private taxi (5-70 JOD) - The fastest and most direct way to reach Umm Qais from Irbid or Amman - useful if you’re on a tight schedule or arriving late. Negotiate a fixed fare in advance for intercity trips; drivers can also act as informal guides to the site.
  • Car hire (~25-50 JOD/day (typical) ) - Hiring a car at Queen Alia or in Amman gives you full flexibility to visit Umm Qais and nearby northern sites. Roads are generally good; GPS or offline maps help in rural areas. Parking at the archaeological site is available.
  • Walking - Once in Umm Qais village and the archaeological park, most ruins and viewpoints are best explored on foot. Paths can be uneven - wear sturdy shoes.
