How to Get to Waqqāş#
Waqqāş (Irbid Governorate) is reached primarily by road from Amman; there are no regular commercial flights into Irbid itself. Most travellers fly into Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and continue by intercity bus, shared minibus or private transfer to the Irbid area.
Queen Alia International Airport (AMM): Queen Alia is Jordan’s main international airport (near Amman). From AMM you can take the airport shuttle or a taxi to Amman (shuttle ≈ 3-4 JOD, 40-60 minutes to Amman city); from Amman catch an intercity bus or shared service to Irbid/Waqqāş (see bus card). A private taxi direct AMM → Irbid typically takes ~1.5-2 hours and costs roughly 40-60 JOD depending on negotiation.
Amman Civil/Marka Airport (MAA) / smaller airfields: There are no regular international flights into Irbid itself; domestic/charter options are very limited. Most international arrivals use AMM and continue by road.
Train: Jordan has no regular intercity passenger rail service connecting Amman and Irbid; rail options are not available for this route.
Bus / Shared minibus: Intercity buses and private coach companies (for example JETT and local operators) run Amman ↔ Irbid routes, usually departing from Abdali or the North Bus Station in Amman and arriving at Irbid Central/Al-Rashid station areas. Expect ~1.5-2 hours and fares commonly in the ~3-6 JOD range. Shared minibuses (service taxis) leave frequently from Amman neighbourhoods (Tabarbour/Al-Jubaiha) and are slightly cheaper but less comfortable; journey time similar.

- Intercity bus (JETT and local coaches) (3-6 JOD) - Reliable, economical way to reach Irbid and surrounding towns. Buses depart Amman from Abdali or the North Bus Station and arrive at Irbid bus terminals; frequency is good throughout the day. Expect coach comfort (air-conditioning, luggage hold) and a journey of roughly 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic.
- Shared minibuses / service taxis (2-4 JOD) - Frequent and cheaper than private taxis; depart from informal stops in Amman (Tabarbour, northern suburbs). They are quicker to fill but less comfortable and can be crowded with luggage; negotiate or confirm destination before boarding.
- Private taxi / transfer (40-60 JOD (AMM → Irbid)) - Direct door-to-door option from AMM or Amman city; fastest but most expensive. Good for early/late flights or if you have heavy luggage or a group. Agree a fixed fare in advance or use a reputable transfer service.
- Car hire (25-60 JOD/day) - Renting a car gives maximum flexibility for exploring Irbid governorate and rural sites. Road quality on the main highways is good; GPS or offline maps recommended. Daily rental rates vary with season and car class.
- Taxis (local) (1.5-5 JOD (short trips)) - Local metered taxis are common for short trips inside Irbid; meters are typical for inner-city trips but always confirm price for longer intercity journeys. Drivers may expect cash in JOD.
- Walking - Waqqāş and nearby towns are compact in places; walking is the best way to explore markets and local streets. Sidewalk quality varies-use caution after dark and watch for traffic.
