The Umbilicus urbis Romae was an ancient monument in Rome that served as the symbolic ‘navel’ of the city, traditionally regarded as the central point from which distances in Rome were reckoned. It was located within the Roman Forum and functioned as a civic and ritual reference point in antiquity.

The structure itself represented the symbolic centre rather than an administrative centre; it formed part of the Forum’s complex of monuments and was associated with rites and the city’s founding mythology. Remains and references to the monument survive in the archaeological record of the Forum.
