The Lapis Niger is an archaic sacred site and black stone monument located in the Roman Forum in Rome. It is notable for an ancient Old Latin inscription carved on a stone slab and for its association with an early sacred precinct.

Visitors see a roped-off excavation area in the Forum that contains the black stone, fragments of paving and the inscribed slab; informational panels explain its significance for early Roman religion and epigraphy. The monument is compact in size but important for scholars of early Rome.

The nearest metro is Colosseo (Line B); from Colosseo station the Forum entrance and the area of the Lapis Niger are about a 5-10 minute walk. Numerous city buses and trams serve Piazza Venezia and nearby stops; the site is also easily reached on foot from the Capitoline Hill and the Colosseum area.

• Go as the Roman Forum opens to see the Lapis Niger with fewer visitors; the site is reached via the Forum/Capitoline area so combine it with an early Forum visit to avoid peak crowds.
• Buy a combined Roman Forum/Palatine ticket beforehand; the Lapis Niger is small and viewed from the raised walkway, so position yourself at the viewing platform near the Curia to get the best close perspective.
• Many visitors miss the significance of the archaic Latin inscriptions and the small shrine-spend a few minutes reading the onsite explanations or bring a concise guide to appreciate why this cramped spot is archaeologically important.
