How to Get to Travesía#
Travesía (Cortés) is reached primarily by road from San Pedro Sula’s Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP). Long-distance buses and shared minibuses from San Pedro Sula link the smaller towns in Cortés; Tegucigalpa (Toncontín, TGU) is a secondary air option with longer overland travel.
Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP): The main international gateway for Cortés Department, located near San Pedro Sula. From SAP you can take a taxi to nearby towns (San Pedro Sula centre ~20-30 minutes) or a shared shuttle/minibus toward Puerto Cortés and surrounding communities. Taxi fares to San Pedro Sula are typically in local lempiras; shared buses/colectivos to nearby towns are much cheaper but slower.
Tegucigalpa - Toncontín (TGU): Tegucigalpa’s airport is the capital’s main entry point if arriving from some domestic or regional flights; overland connections to Cortés are common. Buses and intercity coaches run between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula (journey several hours); private cars or organised shuttles are faster but more expensive.
Train: Honduras does not have a regular passenger rail service connecting these towns; travel is by road.
Bus: Intercity buses and shared minibuses (collectivos/pickups) are the main public option. Major terminals are in San Pedro Sula (central bus terminal) from where frequent services run to Puerto Cortés and smaller coastal towns; journey times depend on traffic but are typically under an hour to nearby coastal communities. Prices are low compared with private transport - expect to pay local fares at bus terminals; schedules are informal, so arrive early and ask locally for the quickest service.
How to Get Around Travesía#
Getting around Travesía and nearby coastal communities is mostly by road: buses for intercity travel and taxis/collectivos for local hops. For convenience and reliability, small private transfers or taxis work best; for budget travel use shared minibuses and walk short distances.
- Bus (intercity) (L 20-150) - Intercity buses and shared minibuses are the most common way to reach and move between towns in Cortés. Services run from San Pedro Sula’s main terminal to Puerto Cortés and nearby villages; accept that timetables are flexible and journeys can be slower due to stops. Buy tickets at the terminal and ask staff which service stops closest to your destination.
- Taxi / Colectivo (L 50-500) - Taxis and shared colectivos provide door-to-door service for short hops and last-mile trips. Taxis are convenient for luggage or tight schedules; shared colectivos are much cheaper but may leave only when full. Negotiate or confirm rates before you go if there’s no meter.
- Private transfer / Shuttle (L 400-1,200) - Private transfers or hotel shuttles are widely used by visitors who prefer a fixed schedule and pickup. They cost more than public buses but save time and hassle, especially for early-morning arrivals or late flights. Book in advance with your accommodation when possible.
- Motorbike / Motorcycle taxi (L 20-150) - Motorcycle taxis and informal motorbike services operate in smaller towns and along the coast for very short trips. They are fast and cheap for single riders but carry limited luggage and may not follow formal safety standards. Use them only for short distances and agree price beforehand.
- Walking - Many neighbourhoods and coastal villages are compact and best explored on foot; walking is the simplest way to get around locally and discover roadside commerce and beaches.
