How to Get to Tongli
Tongli is a traditional water town just south of Suzhou in Jiangsu province; most visitors arrive via Suzhou or nearby airports in Wuxi and Shanghai. The simplest approach is to get to Suzhou by high‑speed train or coach, then take a taxi, local bus or shuttle for the short transfer into the town.
Sunan Shuofang International Airport (WUX): Wuxi’s Sunan Shuofang is the closest commercial airport to Tongli (about 35-45 km). From WUX you can take a taxi to Tongli in roughly 45-60 minutes; expect around CNY 150-250 depending on traffic. There are also shuttle/coach services into Suzhou where you can change to a local taxi or bus for the final 20-30 minute leg.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA): Hongqiao is very convenient because the adjacent Hongqiao Railway Station has frequent high‑speed services to Suzhou. Take the shuttle/covered walk to Hongqiao Railway Station then a high‑speed train to Suzhou Railway Station (about 25-35 minutes); from Suzhou station a taxi to Tongli is ~25-40 minutes (taxi CNY 80-150). You can also take a direct long‑distance coach from Shanghai to Suzhou/Tongli from nearby bus terminals.
Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG): Pudong is farther out; the fastest public option is to take the metro/Maglev to Shanghai Hongqiao (about 60-90 minutes including transfers; metro ~CNY 7-10) and continue by high‑speed train to Suzhou. A direct taxi from PVG to Tongli is possible but long and expensive (roughly 60-90 minutes, CNY 400-700 depending on traffic).
Train: Suzhou is served by Suzhou Railway Station (苏州站) and Suzhou North Railway Station (苏州北站) on the high‑speed network; many G/D trains run from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou in about 25-35 minutes. From Suzhou Railway Station a taxi to Tongli takes about 25-40 minutes; expect around CNY 80-150. If you arrive at Suzhou North or Wuxi stations, adjust for a slightly longer taxi or bus transfer.
Bus: Intercity coaches run between Shanghai, Wuxi and Suzhou; many terminate at Suzhou’s long‑distance bus stations (e.g., Suzhou South/Long‑distance Bus Station) where you can catch local buses or a taxi to Tongli. Local buses/shuttles from Suzhou city to Tongli take roughly 40-60 minutes and typically cost in the CNY 5-20 range depending on service (tourist shuttles cost more). Taxis and app‑rides (Didi) are widely available for the final leg if you prefer door‑to‑door convenience.
How to Get Around Tongli
Getting around Tongli itself is easiest on foot and by short tourist‑boat trips; the town is small and not suited to cars. For arrivals, aim to reach Suzhou (high‑speed train or coach) and then use a taxi, local bus or shuttle for the final 20-40 minute transfer into Tongli.
- High‑speed train (to Suzhou) (CNY 30-120) - High‑speed CRH/G trains from Shanghai Hongqiao and other cities terminate at Suzhou Railway Station (苏州站) and Suzhou North (苏州北). Journey times from Shanghai Hongqiao are about 25-35 minutes; from there a taxi or local bus completes the trip to Tongli. Trains are fast and reliable - use Hongqiao if coming from Shanghai to save time.
- Intercity coach (CNY 20-80) - Coaches run between Shanghai, Wuxi and Suzhou and serve the long‑distance bus stations in Suzhou; some services stop at tourist destinations near Tongli. Coaches are economical and straightforward if you have luggage, but schedules can be less frequent than trains and journey times are longer in peak traffic.
- Local bus & tourist shuttle (CNY 5-25) - Suzhou's local bus network and dedicated tourist shuttles run to Tongli from points across Suzhou city. Buses are very cheap and drop you close to the canal entrances, but routes can be crowded and signage is often only in Chinese. For ease, check schedules at Suzhou bus stations or ask your hotel to book a shuttle.
- Taxi / Didi (CNY 80-700) - Taxis and app rides (Didi) are the most convenient way to reach Tongli from Suzhou, Wuxi or Shanghai Hongqiao for a door‑to‑door trip. Expect 20-40 minutes from central Suzhou (CNY 80-150) and longer - and more expensive - from Shanghai or Pudong Airport. Taxis are widely available but confirm use of the meter and have your destination written in Chinese for drivers.
- Tourist boat rides (CNY 30-120) - Once in Tongli the canals are best experienced by short tourist boat (sampan) trips that loop through the ancient waterways and under low bridges. Boat rides are sold at the main canal piers and typically last 20-40 minutes; they're a tourist service rather than transport but are the nicest way to see the town from the water.
- Walking - Tongli is compact and best explored on foot; narrow lanes and stone bridges make walking the most pleasant way to discover temples, gardens and teahouses. Wear comfortable shoes - many streets are cobbled and there are frequent small steps and bridges.
