Yangcheng Lake Lake

Yangcheng Lake is a freshwater lake in Jiangsu province, China, known regionally for its role in aquaculture and as the primary source of the prized Chinese mitten crab, often called the hairy crab. The lake and its shoreline support crab farming and seasonal markets.

The area draws culinary and food-trade interest especially in autumn during the crab harvest season, when restaurants and markets sell the local produce. The lake sits within the lower Yangtze river plain near urban centres of Jiangsu province and is accessible from nearby towns and transport links.

Yangcheng Lake is served from the Yangtze Delta’s main rail hubs. From Shanghai take a high-speed train (G/ D services) from Shanghai Hongqiao to Suzhou or Kunshan, then transfer to a taxi or local bus for the short road trip to the lake (the taxi ride from Suzhou or Kunshan is typically 20-40 minutes depending on which shore you are visiting). By car you can reach the area via the G2 (Beijing-Shanghai) or G42 expressways and then follow provincial roads toward Suzhou/Kunshan and the lake; from central Shanghai the drive is roughly on the order of an hour to 1.5 hours depending on traffic.

• Plan your visit in late September-November to catch peak hairy-crab season and related food festivals; avoid the first week of October (National Day Golden Week) when local tourism spikes.
• Book a lake boat tour or a short cruise from the lakeside towns (Kunshan/Changshu area) to see reed beds and shoreline villages - boat departures cluster in the towns bordering the lake, so head to the nearest pier rather than an inland market.
• If you intend to eat or buy Yangcheng Lake crabs, use restaurants or vendors who show farm certification labels - there are many imitation sellers, so ask for provenance and prefer reputable hotels or established vendors.
