Overview Tham Lod Cave is a large river cave complex in Pang Mapha District, Mae Hong Son Province, northern Thailand, notable for extensive internal passages and archaeological finds. The cave system contains prehistoric human burials and substantial karst formations.

How to Get to Tham Lod Cave #
Tham Lod Cave is close to Soppong (Pang Mapha) village in Mae Hong Son province, located along Route 1095 between Pai and Mae Hong Son. The cave is commonly reached from Pai by minivan or songthaew along Route 1095 (a road journey of roughly 30-45 km, about 45-90 minutes depending on vehicle); from Soppong village the cave entrance is a short walk from the roadside/parking area with local footpaths and steps.
Tips for Visiting Tham Lod Cave #
- Book your cave tour at the official visitor area and take a guided trip rather than entering alone - local guides run the raft/walk sections and handle torches and safety for the long river passage.
- Arrive early in the day to avoid later tour-group congestion and to have quieter conditions inside the long chambers and along the bamboo-raft section of the cave.
- On the tour, ask your guide to point out the prehistoric wooden coffins and other archaeological features in the side chambers - those finds are a highlight that casual visitors often miss.
