Tham Lod Cave

Overview Tham Lod Cave is a large river cave complex in Pang Mapha District, Mae Hong Son Province, northern Thailand, notable for extensive internal passages and archaeological finds. The cave system contains prehistoric human burials and substantial karst formations.

What visitors find A guided bamboo-raft route navigates roughly a kilometre of river passage through the cave’s main chambers, allowing close views of stalactites, stalagmites and large vaulted galleries. Several side chambers contain teakwood coffin burials and human remains exposed during archaeological work, and multiple entrances provide viewpoints for bat flights at dusk.

History Archaeological investigations have shown the cave was used for funerary and habitation purposes in prehistoric times; local discoveries include ancient wooden coffins and human bones. The cave has long been part of local cultural landscapes and is now managed for tourism with guided raft trips and interpretive information.

Location The cave lies in the limestone karst of Pang Mapha District in Mae Hong Son Province, northern Thailand, within a rural upland landscape of forested hills and fields. The nearest district centre is Pang Mapha town.

What to See#

• Main river passage: The main river passage is a long river-sculpted gallery navigated by bamboo raft; the flowing stream has carved a corridor of chambers and passages.
• Coffin chamber: Coffin chamber contains ancient human remains and wooden burial coffins found within side chambers and niches in the cave system.
• Stalactite chambers: Large stalactite and stalagmite chambers open into daylight at several entrances, providing viewpoints where bat flights can be observed at dusk.

What makes Tham Lod so special is that the Nam Lang River flows right through the heart of the cave. Dripping stalactites and stalagmites fill the chambers with a surreal atmosphere, helped along by the huge populations of swifts and bats that live inside. It is worth standing at the entrance at dusk, when tens of thousands of swifts return to nest.

The entrance resembles a gaping jaw, opening into a first chamber about five storeys high and 200 metres wide. To go further you hire a guide and lantern at the cave mouth, along with a bamboo raft to carry you through; the established route leads past all the main highlights, each marked with a sign. A bridge crosses the river to a small sandy beach where boatmen wait to take more adventurous travellers deeper into the cave, and for something different you can arrange a kayak trip through the cave with Cave Lodge. Teakwood coffins believed to have been left by the ancient Lawa people have been found deep inside Tham Lod and neighbouring caves.

Tham Lod Cave is close to Soppong (Pang Mapha) village in Mae Hong Son province, located along Route 1095 between Pai and Mae Hong Son. The cave is commonly reached from Pai by minivan or songthaew along Route 1095 (a road journey of roughly 30-45 km, about 45-90 minutes depending on vehicle); from Soppong village the cave entrance is a short walk from the roadside/parking area with local footpaths and steps.

• Book your cave tour at the official visitor area and take a guided trip rather than entering alone - local guides run the raft/walk sections and handle torches and safety for the long river passage.
• Arrive early in the day to avoid later tour-group congestion and to have quieter conditions inside the long chambers and along the bamboo-raft section of the cave.
• On the tour, ask your guide to point out the prehistoric wooden coffins and other archaeological features in the side chambers - those finds are a highlight that casual visitors often miss.
