Tebtunis
Archaeological Site Greco-Roman archaeological site known for papyri finds
In the Fayoum region, Tebtunis preserves Greco‑Roman and Egyptian temple remains and has yielded papyri and animal mummies; archaeologists and history‑minded visitors tour excavation trenches and local exhibits.
Tebtunis is an ancient settlement in Egypt’s Faiyum region notable for its archaeological and documentary remains from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. It is best known for the large body of papyri and documentary texts recovered from the site.
The site’s highlights are the documentary archives and temple-related deposits containing papyri, ostraca and administrative records written in Demotic, Greek and Egyptian, which provide detailed evidence of local religion, economy and administration. These finds include both secular and religious texts.
Tebtunis developed as a local centre in the Faiyum during the Hellenistic and Roman eras and was linked to nearby agricultural and temple estates. The papyrological and material remains demonstrate the town’s administrative role and its ritual associations with a local crocodile-god cult.
Located in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, Tebtunis lies within the Faiyum depression and agricultural landscape west of the Nile; it is part of the broader oasis environment that supported intensive ancient farming and settlement.
- Tebtunis Papyri: Contains a large corpus of documentary material in Demotic, Greek and Egyptian scripts that illuminate daily, religious and administrative life in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
- Temple remains: Associated with a temple complex dedicated to a local crocodile-associated deity often called Soknebtunis in the archaeological literature.
