El Lahun

El Lahun (Kahun) is the site of the pyramid and associated settlement built for Pharaoh Senusret II of Egypt’s 12th Dynasty, located in the Faiyum region. The complex comprises a royal pyramid and nearby planned town of workers and officials.

The site includes the ruined pyramid structure, parts of the mortuary complex and the mudbrick town that served the pyramid workforce and administrators; these remains have been important for understanding Middle Kingdom urban planning and social organization.

The pyramid and town were excavated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with significant finds including household pottery and written documents that illuminate administrative practices of the period. The site’s architecture demonstrates typical Middle Kingdom construction methods including mudbrick in the town and stone and brick in the pyramid complex.

El Lahun lies on the eastern edge of the Faiyum basin in Faiyum Governorate, roughly southwest of Cairo in Middle Egypt; the archaeological site is near the modern village associated with the ancient settlement.
