How to Get to Suárez#

Suárez is a barrio in Loíza on Puerto Rico’s northeast coast. Most visitors arrive via San Juan (SJU) and complete the trip overland by car, taxi or shared van.

By Air

Félix Román Meléndez (SJU not applicable): The main international gateway for eastern Puerto Rico destinations is Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan; from SJU expect around 50-90 minutes driving to eastern coastal towns such as Suárez (Luquillo/Loíza area), depending on traffic.

Ceiba / Roosevelt Roads (NR/closed to regular service): Some small charter flights and private operators have used Ceiba in the past, but for scheduled arrivals use SJU or regional airports and arrange ground transfers.

By Train & Bus

Train: Puerto Rico does not have intercity passenger rail connections to Loíza or Suárez.

Bus: Local public buses and shared vans operate in the San Juan-Loíza-Luquillo corridor; municipal buses and occasional intercity stops will get you to Loíza/Suárez but allow extra time for transfers and infrequent service.

How to Get Around Suárez#

Suárez (Loíza) is best reached by car or taxi from San Juan; public buses and shared vans are cheaper but less predictable. For short local trips walking is fine, but a vehicle makes exploring the wider area convenient.

  • Car rental (USD 30-70/day) - Renting a car at SJU is the simplest way to reach Loíza/Suárez and explore nearby beaches and eateries. Coastal roads can be busy during peak times; factor in parking at popular beaches.
  • Taxi (USD 25-80) - Taxis and pre-arranged transfers from SJU or San Juan are straightforward for door-to-door trips; negotiate longer-distance fares in advance. Local taxi availability varies by time of day.
  • Public bus / shared van (USD 0.75-5) - Shared vans and municipal buses run between San Juan and Loíza/Luquillo; they are very inexpensive but schedules are informal and trips can be slow with multiple stops. Useful for budget travellers who are flexible with timing.
  • Rideshare (Uber) (USD 8-40) - Uber serves the San Juan metro area and often reaches nearby coastal towns; availability in Loíza and small barrios can be hit-or-miss, especially late at night. Use the app to estimate cost before you travel.
  • Biking - Short coastal rides can be enjoyable but beware of stretches without bike lanes and occasional heavy traffic. Only recommended for confident cyclists on quieter side roads.
  • Walking - Walking is practical within the immediate barrio for local restaurants and beach access, but not for inter-town travel. Take care where sidewalks are limited.
