Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Northwestern Drylands (Pakistan, Punjab & Rajasthan, Gujarat)
April often tastes of heat: temperatures climb rapidly through the thirties across Rajasthan and Punjab and coastal Gujarat grows muggy. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms and local dust storms (loo winds in some years) arrive by late April into May, making afternoons oppressive. Trekking in the Aravallis or desert camping requires early departures and plenty of water; city sightseeing is best at dawn and dusk. If you plan to visit heritage sites, expect increasing glare and higher daytime fatigue.
The Indo‑Gangetic Plain & Bengal Coast (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Bangladesh)
April is commonly hot and dry across the basin with humidity rising in the east: midday temperatures in Delhi and Bhopal climb sharply, while Kolkata moves toward sticky, sultry days. Thunderstorms can explode in late afternoons in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, offering brief relief and localised downpours. Tourists planning river cruises on the Ganges should check water levels and be ready for warmer nights. Hydration, light clothing and shifting activities to mornings and evenings help manage the heat.
Nepal & Bhutan (Himalayan lowlands to high passes)
April is prime spring trekking: stable weather, long daylight and spectacular rhododendron bloom across mid-elevations around Everest, Annapurna and Bhutan’s valleys. Trails fill with trekkers, permits and flights to Lukla or Paro should be booked well in advance. Lower altitude hikes, cultural circuits and homestays are excellent now but be prepared for chilly nights above 3,000m. Travel benefits from generally clear skies and comfortable trekking temperatures during the day.
Northeast India & the Eastern Himalaya (Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram)
April brings hot, sticky afternoons in the Brahmaputra valley and increased thunderstorm risk-Assam and parts of Manipur get gusty pre-monsoon storms while the highlands remain pleasant. Meghalaya and the Khasi hills still retain cooler temperatures, but fog and brief heavy showers can appear in the evenings. This month is good for short treks and cultural travel in the hills, though lowland wildlife viewing can be disrupted by afternoon rain. Pack waterproofs and insect repellent for humid nights.
Peninsular India & the Western Ghats plus Sri Lanka (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra, Telangana, Sri Lanka)
April is the onset of hot, humid conditions across the peninsula: days grow sweltering in Chennai and interior Karnataka, while pre-monsoon thunderstorms become more frequent in the Ghats. Hill stations like Kodaikanal and Munnar remain the favoured refuge for cooling off, though even they warm by late month. For travelers, switch to early starts, accept afternoon breaks and watch for brief but intense downpours. Festival crowds and local holidays can make coastal bookings busy around specific dates.
Maldives & Lakshadweep (Indian Ocean atolls)
April signals the approach of the southwest monsoon: humidity climbs and short, heavy showers begin to appear more frequently, particularly later in the month. Diving remains good but visibility can fluctuate after brief storms and wind starts to pick up. Travelers seeking the calmest seas should plan earlier in the month; those insistent on quieter resorts can still find deals as bookings thin. Bring waterproofs and expect some service disruptions on rougher sea days.
