Country Weather in October

Country High Low Rain UV Feels

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Caribbean Coast & the Guianas (Venezuela’s northern coast, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana)

Showery periods are much reduced and the air feels clearer; daytime temperatures hover in the upper 20s and the humidity eases compared with the wet months. Georgetown, Cayenne and coastal Venezuelan towns enjoy steadier weather and boat schedules normalise, so it’s a good time to combine city visits with short river excursions. Mosquito pressure drops, which is convenient for nighttime walks and alfresco dining. Sunscreen and a light jacket for breezy evenings are useful.

Amazon Basin (Brazilian Amazon, eastern Peru, southern Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia)

This month often brings the best balance: consistently drier mornings, warm days in the high 20s and reliable river conditions for travel between lodges and communities. Popular river routes in Brazil’s Amazonas state and Peru’s PAC regions run their regular schedules, making it easier to combine jungle stays with city connections. Pack light long sleeves for mosquitoes at dusk and consider antimalarial advice for stays longer than a few days.

Northeast Brazil & the Sertão (Coastal cities: Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza - interior drylands of the Sertão)

Many coastal resorts stay sunny and warm while the central and southern moist pockets get steadier rain; daytime temperatures near the shore remain around 28-30°C. The sertão’s rainy window often begins to make itself known in parts, offering relief from months of extreme dryness but still with erratic distribution-carry flexible plans and local guidance. Nature tourism perks up as scrubland greens and riverine species are easier to spot after initial storms.

Southeast Brazil & Central Plateau (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Brasília, Goiás)

The southeastern coast shifts toward a drier pattern and spring-like weather; daytime highs drop a few degrees making city tours in São Paulo and Rio more pleasant. Brasília and the plateau experience warm days and cool nights which is excellent for outdoor markets and hikes. Shoulder-season prices and fewer crowds make this an excellent time to visit the region’s cultural centers-pack both sun protection for daytime and a fleece for the crisp mornings.

Andean Highlands & Altiplano (Colombia highlands, Ecuador, Peru highlands, Bolivia’s Altiplano, northern Argentina high Andes)

Mostly dry conditions return to many highland areas and excellent trekking windows open up again; daytime temperatures can be warm on sun-exposed slopes while nights stay cold above 3,000m. The shoulder season is inviting for less-crowded visits to archeological sites and highland markets-do bring a warm hat and midweight jacket for pre-dawn starts. Some higher passes may still have lingering snow patches early in the month.

Northern & Central Chile - Atacama, Coastal North and Central Chile (Arica to Santiago, including Atacama Desert and valleys)

Central Chile begins to cool noticeably and occasional cold fronts can bring light rain to coastal and valley areas; the Atacama remains extremely dry and stable. This is a quieter travel month for Santiago and the wine regions, offering good value and fewer crowds at popular wineries. For desert treks and high cultural sites like San Pedro, days are pleasant and nights cold-use insulating layers.

Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Southern Chile & Argentina: Chiloé, Puerto Montt, Torres del Paine, Ushuaia, southern Lake District)

The deep of winter brings cold, windy conditions and heavy snowfall in the Andes and higher passes; many long-distance trekking routes remain closed and road travel can be slow or interrupted. Wildlife viewing shifts to coastal birding and select sheltered walks; professional winter guides and proper equipment are essential for any glacier or mountaineering trips. Ensure you have travel insurance covering winter weather disruptions.
