Country Weather in February

Country High Low Rain UV Feels

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Caribbean Coast & the Guianas (Venezuela’s northern coast, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana)

A pattern of warm, muggy days continues with tropical showers in the afternoons on most days; Georgetown, Paramaribo and Cayenne see temperatures in the high 20s. River ferries on the Orinoco and Essequibo run regularly but watch for strong currents after heavy rain. Street markets stay lively and hotels are not yet at high season prices, so January can be pleasant for culture and city exploration if you carry a compact umbrella. Nighttime is humid but often cooler near the sea breeze.

Amazon Basin (Brazilian Amazon, eastern Peru, southern Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia)

Riverine travel remains slippery but rewarding as floodwaters inundate forest terraces and draw animals to unusual viewpoints; daytime heat continues around 30°C with near-constant humidity. Boat cruises on the Solimões and Negro are dramatic, with islands submerged and rivers mingling; expect a lot of on-deck time watching river life. City services remain reliable in Manaus and Belém, but smaller jungle communities may limit road connections-flexibility and local guidance are important.

Northeast Brazil & the Sertão (Coastal cities: Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza - interior drylands of the Sertão)

Strong coastal sunshine and warm seas sustain beach season vibes; daytime temperatures commonly sit near 30°C and ocean breezes make city promenades pleasant. Rainfall patterns differ by micro-region-some parts of the interior sertão remain bone-dry while a few coastal areas see brief showers. Cultural festivals and beachside restaurants are active; carry both reef shoes for rocky beaches and a light rain layer for sudden squalls.

Southeast Brazil & Central Plateau (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Brasília, Goiás)

Muggy heat persists on the coast with strong sun and regular late-afternoon storms in Rio and São Paulo; beach and mountain escapes like Petrópolis offer cooler pockets. Brasília and the Central Plateau remain in their dry season with warm, crisp mornings and pleasant daytime highs-this is a great time for visiting the capital’s outdoor monuments. Expect busy festival crowds on the coast, so plan transport early and pack breathable fabrics and a good hat.

Andean Highlands & Altiplano (Colombia highlands, Ecuador, Peru highlands, Bolivia’s Altiplano, northern Argentina high Andes)

Cool, dry conditions dominate and the highlands are often at their clearest, making this one of the best windows for mountain treks and photographic vistas in places like La Paz and the Sacred Valley. Daytime temperatures are mild on terraces but freeze at night at elevations above 3,500m, so sleeping bags or warm jackets are necessary. Visitor numbers increase on popular routes such as the Inca Trail and Ausangate circuits, so book guides and permits well in advance.

Northern & Central Chile - Atacama, Coastal North and Central Chile (Arica to Santiago, including Atacama Desert and valleys)

Chilean coastal fog-camanchaca-can bring cool, misty mornings to some north coast stretches, but the Atacama remains bone-dry and pleasant during daylight hours with highs in the mid-20s. Strong UV means daytime sun protection is critical, particularly at altitude where oxygen is thin and burn risk increases. Salt-flat tours and geyser visits operate reliably, but plan altitude acclimatisation if you move from sea level to high valleys rapidly.

Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Southern Chile & Argentina: Chiloé, Puerto Montt, Torres del Paine, Ushuaia, southern Lake District)

Peak trekking conditions arrive and long daylight hours make it possible to cover more ground-temperatures in the low teens are common but wind remains the defining element. National parks like Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares are at their busiest and refugios and campsites should be booked well in advance. Glacier boat trips run frequently, though sudden squalls are still possible; bring waterproof trousers and a warm midlayer for exposed viewpoints.
