Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Caribbean Coast & the Guianas (Venezuela’s northern coast, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana)
Rain gradually eases in places but remains frequent; daytime highs continue in the high 20s and cloud cover can persist for days. In coastal Venezuela and the Guianas, this is often the soggiest stretch of the year, so plan indoor cultural activities in Georgetown or Paramaribo as backups. Boat access to smaller estuaries becomes more straightforward late in the month as some tributaries start to fall. Lightweight breathable rainwear and water-resistant footwear remain musts.
Amazon Basin (Brazilian Amazon, eastern Peru, southern Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia)
River channels are noticeably lower now and walking trails re-open in many parks; days are still warm around 27-31°C but the air feels less oppressive. This is one of the better stretches for trekking in edges of the basin (southern Peru and Bolivia) because paths are drier and access to remote sites improves. Nighttime insect activity decreases, making camp sleeps more pleasant, and local guides begin scheduling more foot-based wildlife walks.
Northeast Brazil & the Sertão (Coastal cities: Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza - interior drylands of the Sertão)
Showers increase in frequency in coastal Pernambuco and southern Bahia, but they are usually brief and followed by sun; daytime highs cluster around 28-31°C. The agrarian interior watches for the onset of reliable rains-farmers track the first storms carefully-so there’s local interest in early-season showers. Nightlife and food scenes in coastal cities flourish in comfortably warm evenings; pack a lightweight waterproof for sudden rains.
Southeast Brazil & Central Plateau (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Brasília, Goiás)
The plateau is dry and pleasant, ideal for exploring Brasília’s open-air attractions while coastal cities still alternate sun and heavy afternoon storms; expect highs around 28-32°C near the sea. Trails in Serra da Canastra and national parks are usually in good condition and great for water-based activities at waterfalls, which swell after the summer rains. City hotels may have offseason deals as foreign crowds wane.
Andean Highlands & Altiplano (Colombia highlands, Ecuador, Peru highlands, Bolivia’s Altiplano, northern Argentina high Andes)
The wet pattern continues with frequent cloudbursts and misty mornings in valleys; temperatures at high elevations are cool to cold overnight while daytime windows can be pleasantly mild. The Inca Trail is open but muddy and often slippery; guides may reroute groups or recommend alternatives like the Salkantay trek. Birding and botanical diversity are at a peak as mountain flowers and cloud-forest species come into bloom.
Northern & Central Chile - Atacama, Coastal North and Central Chile (Arica to Santiago, including Atacama Desert and valleys)
Santiago enters cooler, crisper days and the central valley shows more fall-like weather-perfect for walking city neighborhoods and winery visits without summer crowds. Atacama’s daytime warmth remains pleasant and the thin air stays dry; nights require insulated clothing for stargazing tours. Occasional Pacific low-pressure systems can bring brief, light rain to coastal central Chile but rarely affect the desert far north.
Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Southern Chile & Argentina: Chiloé, Puerto Montt, Torres del Paine, Ushuaia, southern Lake District)
Winter settles in with cold, wet conditions and regular snow at higher elevations; some roads and park facilities close or run on reduced schedules and daytime highs often stay between 0-6°C. Glacier viewing is still possible but requires guided boat or vehicle access rather than long exposed treks. Bring insulated layers, waterproofs and expect short daylight hours-this is a demanding time for independent trekking but unique for photography under moody skies.
