Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
Caribbean Coast & the Guianas (Venezuela’s northern coast, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana)
Thunderstorms are at their most persistent now, with long, wet spells that can make inland dirt tracks impassable-northern interior Guyana and the Venezuelan delta are at their wettest. Coastal cities still get daily sea breezes that temper the heat, but excursions into swampy reserves and wildlife spotting trips require local timing expertise; guides may work around peak river flows for the best sightings. It’s a lower-season time for hotels, so you can find value stays if you’re flexible about last-minute changes.
Amazon Basin (Brazilian Amazon, eastern Peru, southern Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia)
Deep wet-season conditions persist with near-daily thunderstorms and saturated ground; mosquitoes are plentiful and humidity makes physical exertion feel harder. Iquitos and Manaus can feel almost tropical sauna-like, and smaller communities sometimes shift to boat-only supply routes. For researchers and photographers this time is unmatched for observing river ecology transformations, but leisure travelers should be prepared for minimal dry land access and bring illness-prevention supplies.
Northeast Brazil & the Sertão (Coastal cities: Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza - interior drylands of the Sertão)
Coastal skies are mostly sunny and the sea is warm-ideal for snorkeling and surf in beaches near Fortaleza and Porto de Galinhas; daytime temps are generally in the 29-31°C band. Interior heat peaks daily and shade is sparse; small towns often slow down midday and travelers should plan early starts. If you want to experience northeastern cuisine and music, city festivals and evening nightlife are lively without the heavier rains yet.
Southeast Brazil & Central Plateau (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Brasília, Goiás)
Long, warm days with frequent showers on the coast and clear, dry conditions on the plateau define this period; Rio remains a draw for beachgoers but rain can interrupt plans. Sao Paulo’s summer downpours often bring temporary flooding in low areas and some short transport delays-carry waterproof covers for electronics. Accommodation demand in seaside towns is high during holiday periods, so reserve in advance.
Andean Highlands & Altiplano (Colombia highlands, Ecuador, Peru highlands, Bolivia’s Altiplano, northern Argentina high Andes)
The wet season becomes well established in many Andean zones with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and muddy highland tracks; day temperatures remain moderate in the valleys but nights are cooler. Rain reduces the predictability of long treks-some passes can become slippery-so guides may alter or shorten itineraries. The Altiplano around La Paz and Potosí still has sunny mornings interspersed with conspicuous afternoon clouds; waterproof boots and gaiters are useful.
Northern & Central Chile - Atacama, Coastal North and Central Chile (Arica to Santiago, including Atacama Desert and valleys)
Warm sun and very low humidity hold in the north while central Chile moves into its mild autumn-vineyards change color and Santiago enjoys pleasant outdoor café culture. Nights in the Atacama are bitterly cold at altitude, great for stargazers but requiring warm layers for overnight excursions. This shoulder window is quieter than high summer, offering good deals on tours and easier access to remote desert sites.
Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Southern Chile & Argentina: Chiloé, Puerto Montt, Torres del Paine, Ushuaia, southern Lake District)
Autumnal color arrives and temperatures begin to fall, with daytime highs typically between 4-12°C; wind and rain frequency increase as the season progresses. Visitor numbers drop, offering quieter trails and lower prices, but the risk of sudden storms and trail closures rises-prepare to be flexible with plans. Many outfitters scale back services later in the season, so confirm availability ahead of travel and pack warm gloves and layered insulation.
