Southern coast & riverine lowlands (Mogadishu, Kismayo, Juba & Shabelle valleys)

Coastal heat and humidity are strongest in January along Mogadishu and Kismayo, with daytime temperatures often in the high 20s-low 30s °C and sticky nights. The Shabelle and Juba river systems are low after the long rains, so riverbank farming is quieter and many rural tracks are passable. For travelers this is an easy month for beachside movement and city visits, but expect occasional morning haze and pack light, breathable clothing plus sun protection.

Central plains & Galmudug (Galkayo, Hobyo, Dhusamareb)

A hot, dusty atmosphere often greets visitors in January as the central plains settle into the dry Jilaal; daytime heat is intense on exposed scrubland around Galkayo. Roads across the open plains are generally passable but the lack of shade makes midday travel unpleasant; mornings and evenings are the practical times to move. Expect minimal rainfall, limited services in smaller towns, and pack sun protection, sunglasses and plenty of water.

Puntland & northeast coast (Bosaso, Garowe, Cape Guardafui)

January brings relatively warm, dry conditions to Puntland; Bosaso on the Gulf of Aden feels a cool sea breeze by day while nights can be pleasantly mild. The coast is busier with local trade and fishing activity; Cape Guardafui is dramatic and accessible in calm conditions but rough seas occasionally close small-boat routes. Travelers will appreciate comfortable coastal temperatures and should carry sun protection and a light wind layer.

Gulf of Aden coast & Somaliland lowlands (Berbera, Hargeisa, Zeila)

January is one of the most agreeable months on the Gulf of Aden coast: Berbera enjoys cool morning breezes, Hargeisa is dry and sunny, and days are comfortable for sightseeing. The lack of rain makes road travel straightforward, and city markets are lively after holiday periods. Travelers should bring a light jacket for coastal evenings and sunscreen for clear, bright days.

Northern highlands (Cal Madow / Golis Mountains, Erigavo, Las Anod area)

January brings cool, crisp mornings at elevation in places like Erigavo and parts of the Golis and Cal Madow ranges, where nights can be noticeably cooler than the coast. Daytime sun makes hilltop views excellent, and trails are usually dry and firm for walking. Pack a warm layer for evenings and be ready for clear skies ideal for photography and hiking at higher altitudes.
