About Sergeant Major Thawee Folk Museum#
The Sergeant-Major Thawee Folk Museum will appeal to anyone curious about traditional Thai culture, as most of the items on display are household objects and farming implements. The collection was patiently assembled by Sergeant-Major Thawee, who is well known throughout Thailand’s bronze-casting fraternity for his contribution to Buddhist imagery in the north as a master metal-caster in his own right. His Buddha-casting foundry stands just 50 metres down the road and is easily combined with a visit here.
Many of the exhibits were gathered in areas where he worked casting Buddha images, in Nakhon Sawan, Tak, Sukhothai and Phitsanulok. Look out for the coconut scrapers, old toys, pottery, crafts and some ingenious animal traps, as well as the Buddhist imagery. His collection of farm tools grew so large over the years that he set up the museum in the 1980s; it has since expanded to fill several buildings, and a small entrance fee now applies.
