Wat Ratburana
Temple Ayutthaya temple ruins with central prang and relics
Within Ayutthaya Historical Park, Wat Ratburana shows a restored central prang and ruined viharns; visitors tour the temple site when exploring Ayutthaya’s 14th‑century capital remains.
Wat Ratburana is a ruined Buddhist temple within Ayutthaya Historical Park, originally established in the early 15th century and notable for its central prang and carved stucco work.
The site is dominated by a raised platform and a tall central prang with surviving stucco decoration and adjacent chedi bases; the inner chamber beneath the prang contained sculptural and mural remains recovered by archaeologists.
The temple was built in 1424 by King Borom Rachathirat II as a funerary monument. Over subsequent centuries the complex fell into ruin following the 18th century conflicts that damaged much of Ayutthaya’s religious architecture.
The ruins sit on Ayutthaya island within the protected historical park, part of the cluster of royal and religious monuments north of the old royal palace area and roughly 70 kilometers north of Bangkok.
- Founding: Built in 1424 by King Borom Rachathirat II as a funerary temple, it commemorates two royal brothers who died in a succession dispute.
- Archaeological remains: Excavations have revealed decorative stucco, murals and carved Buddha images concentrated around the prang and inner chamber.
What to See #
- Central prang: The central prang is the site's dominant structure and rises above the surrounding ruined platforms; it is the main surviving tower of the original temple complex.
- Crypt and inner chamber: An inner crypt and chamber beneath the main prang contained sculptures and stucco work; surviving fragments and carved decoration are visible around the base and interior of the monument.
