How to Get to Sarchí Norte

Sarchí Norte is a popular craft town in Alajuela Province and is easiest reached by road from San José. Fly into Juan Santamaría (SJO) for the most options; from there take an intercity bus, shuttle or taxi to Sarchí.

By Air

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): The main international gateway near San José. From SJO you can take a shared airport shuttle or taxi to San José (25-40 minutes) and then a direct bus or private transfer to Sarchí Norte; total door-to-door travel to Sarchí is typically around 60-90 minutes by road. Airport taxis cost roughly CRC 18,000-30,000 to San José; intercity buses from San José toward Alajuela/Sarchí are very cheap (see bus card).

Tobías Bolaños Airport (SYQ): A smaller domestic airport in Pavas used by some domestic carriers and charter flights. From SYQ you must transfer by taxi to central San José or Alajuela and continue by road to Sarchí; road transfers are short (20-60 minutes depending on routing).

By Train & Bus

Train: Costa Rica has no national passenger rail service to Sarchí.

Bus: Public buses run from San José and Alajuela to Sarchí Norte (buses depart from terminals in San José and from Alajuela). The journey from San José/Alajuela takes about 60-90 minutes depending on traffic; fares are low (typically under CRC 1,000 for intercity buses). Shared shuttles and private transfers (airport shuttles) are available from SJO - expect higher fares but door-to-door convenience.

How to Get Around Sarchí Norte #

Sarchí Norte is compact and easy to explore on foot; the main artisan shops and views are along the central road. Walking is the best way to hop between workshops and cafes. Regular public buses connect Sarchí with nearby towns (Alajuela and San José). Taxis and private shuttles are available but less common; buses are inexpensive and run on cash, so carry change.
