The Museo Nacional de Costa Rica is the country’s national museum located in central San José, occupying the former Bellavista Fortress. It collects and displays archaeological, historical and natural-history material important to Costa Rican heritage.

Permanent galleries present pre-Columbian archaeology, colonial and republican history, and exhibits on Costa Rica’s biodiversity. The museum also maintains outdoor courtyards and display cases with artifacts recovered from archaeological sites across the country.

The institution was established to preserve and present Costa Rica’s cultural and natural heritage and has occupied the Bellavista building, a former military barracks, since the early 20th century. The museum’s collections have grown through archaeological research and donations.

The museum is located in downtown San José, within walking distance of central plazas and government buildings, and is accessible by the city’s main roads and public transit.

Museo Nacional de Costa Rica is in central San José. From Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) there are regular airport buses and taxis into downtown San José - the drive is about 20 km by the main road (time varies with traffic). Once in central San José the museum is reached on foot or by short taxi from the main downtown areas and bus stops.

• Don't miss the exterior walls: the fort still shows marks from the 1948 civil war, which are useful context for the museum's modern-history displays and are often overlooked by visitors heading straight to prehistoric collections.
• Combine a museum stop with nearby central San José sites (the Central Market and Plaza de la Cultura) for a compact city walking route that keeps transit time low and lets you return to the museum if you need more time.
