How to Get to Rõuge
Rõuge in Võrumaa is reached most easily by road from Tallinn or Tartu; regional buses serve the area but trains are not a direct option. Renting a car gives the greatest flexibility for exploring the hilly, lake-rich countryside.
Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (TLL): Tallinn is the main international airport for southeastern Estonia. From Tallinn you can reach Võrumaa by car or bus; driving time to Rõuge is roughly 2-2.5 hours. Taxis from the airport for such a long trip are possible but expensive compared with bus options.
Tartu Airport (TAY): Tartu is closer to Võrumaa than Tallinn for some routes; travel from Tartu to Rõuge by road is typically about 1-1.5 hours. Use local buses or a rental car for the onward journey.
Train: Estonia’s rail network (Elron) does not serve Rõuge directly; the closest railheads are in larger towns such as Tartu and Valga. From those towns you need a bus or taxi for the final leg.
Bus: Regional and county bus services link Tartu, Võru and smaller centres with Rõuge; bus is the usual public transport option for reaching the village from major hubs. Timetables vary seasonally so check local schedules.
How to Get Around Rõuge #
Rõuge is a compact small town and easily walkable, with the lake and nearby nature areas within short distances. Summer is good for cycling on local roads and trails. Regional buses connect Rõuge with Võru and other towns in Võrumaa; service is limited outside peak times so plan ahead. Taxis exist but can be scarce; typical local bus fares are around €1-3.
