Riposto City
Coastal town in Sicily with beautiful beaches
Riposto sits under Mount Etna's shadow, its harbour serving fishing boats and ferries to the Aeolian Islands. Visitors eat grilled tuna, watch lava-formed black-sand shores, and use Riposto as a quieter base for Etna treks.
Why Visit Riposto?#
This eastern Sicilian port is prized for its marina life and easy access to Mount Etna, making it a base for both seafood and volcano tourism. The Port of Riposto hums with fishing boats and fish markets where swordfish and fresh sardines are highlights, while nearby Etna vineyards and little trattorie showcase smoky, lava-influenced flavors. Quiet promenades and proximity to Taormina add cultural contrast to the coastal atmosphere.

How to Get to Riposto#
Riposto (served via Giarre‑Riposto station) is most easily reached through Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA). From Catania Centrale take a regional Trenitalia service to Giarre‑Riposto and finish by local bus or a short taxi ride into Riposto.
Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA): Catania’s Fontanarossa is the closest major airport to Riposto (about 45-60 minutes by combined road/train). From CTA take the Alibus to Catania Centrale (≈€4, 20-25 minutes), then regional Trenitalia trains to Giarre‑Riposto station (≈€2.50-€4, 20-25 minutes) and a short local bus or taxi into Riposto.
Comiso Airport (CIY) / Palermo (PMO): Comiso (Ragusa) and Palermo are alternative airports but are much farther. From Palermo Falcone‑Borsellino (PMO) the rail/road journey to Riposto takes about 2.5-3.5 hours by train or bus; expect higher fares and longer travel times than from Catania.
Train: Riposto is served via the nearby Giarre‑Riposto railway station on the Messina-Catania line (station often shown as Giarre‑Riposto). Regional Trenitalia trains connect to Catania Centrale (≈20-25 minutes) and to Messina; single regional fares Catania↔Giarre are typically a few euros.
Bus: Local buses and intercity carriers run along the eastern Sicilian coast; local buses connect Giarre station with Riposto town. Tickets for local buses are low‑cost (often around €1.30-€2) and are purchased from tobacconists or on the bus depending on operator.
How to Get Around Riposto#
Riposto is straightforward to reach from Catania-Fontanarossa (CTA) via train to Giarre‑Riposto, then a short local bus or taxi. Within town, walking covers most needs; regional trains and rental cars are best for day trips along the coast and to Mount Etna.
- Regional Train (Trenitalia) (€2-€6) - Regional Trenitalia services connect Giarre‑Riposto with Catania and Messina. Trains are frequent on the east‑coast line; they’re the fastest and cheapest way to travel between coastal towns. Buy tickets at stations or via the Trenitalia app and validate paper tickets before boarding.
- Local Bus (€1-€3) - Local bus lines link Giarre station with Riposto town and serve nearby beaches and villages. Fares are low (usually around €1-€3) and tickets are bought from kiosks or on board depending on operator. Timetables can be sparse outside peak hours, so check connections in advance.
- Taxi (€5-€15) - Taxis are useful for the final short hop from Giarre‑Riposto station into central Riposto or for luggage‑heavy transfers from the airport. Fares for short local trips are modest; agree the price in advance on tourist routes if there’s no meter.
- Car / Rental (€25-€60/day) - A rental car gives the most flexibility to explore the east Sicilian coast and Etna‑area attractions. Roads are generally good; summer traffic near tourist beaches can slow progress. Parking in Riposto is available but limited close to the seafront.
- Bicycle (€5-€20/day) - Short coastal routes around Riposto are pleasant by bike, and many guesthouses rent bicycles seasonally. Cycling is a good way to reach nearby beaches and seaside promenades, but be cautious on main roads where there are fewer bike lanes.
- Walking - Riposto’s centre and seafront are compact and best explored on foot. The promenade, harbour and local shops are all within easy walking distance, making strolling the primary way to enjoy the town.
