Peloritani Mountains

The Peloritani are a mountain range in northeastern Sicily, forming a rugged spine above the province of Messina and separating coastal plains from higher inland terrain.

The mountains have a long history of local settlement and seasonal land use, with ancient pathways and small agricultural communities adapting to steep terrain. The region’s geology and vegetation reflect Sicily’s complex tectonic history.

The Peloritani lie in Sicily’s northeastern corner, rising above the city of Messina and extending inland toward central parts of the island; access is typically from Messina and nearby coastal towns.

• Views and topography: The range forms the high ground above the Strait of Messina and offers viewpoints where weather and sea visibility provide panoramic views toward the Italian mainland and Sicily’s northern coast.

• Visit in spring or autumn and plan to be on the ridgeline at first light for the clearest views of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna-summer afternoons can be hazy and very hot.
• Use Messina as the primary gateway town: many of the most accessible trailheads and scenic drives start from roads that climb inland from Messina rather than from the southern coast.
• Head for Monte Scuderi and the lesser-known ridge viewpoints rather than the busy coastal overlooks; these spots reward early visitors with panoramic vistas that many day-trippers miss.
