Qasr al-Azraq is a basalt fortress near the town of Azraq in Jordan’s Zarqa Governorate, sited beside an oasis that has long provided water in an otherwise arid landscape. Its black-basal construction and strategic location make it a regional landmark.
Visitors encounter thick basalt walls, a central courtyard and defensive towers, plus views across the Azraq oasis and surrounding desert plain. The site is compact and commonly visited on day trips from regional centres.
The fortress has a long history of military and strategic use due to its location at an important oasis; it was used as a base by T. E. Lawrence during the 1917 Arab Revolt. The structure visible today reflects successive phases of occupation and repair using local basalt masonry.
Located beside the Azraq oasis in Zarqa Governorate, the castle sits east of Amman and is reachable by road from Zarqa and the capital; it is roughly 100 kilometres east of Amman by road.
- Material and setting: Constructed of local basalt and set beside the Azraq oasis, the fortress offers strong visual contrast with the surrounding desert and panoramic views over the oasis pools.
