About Pura Samuan Tiga#
One of the most intriguing temples in the Ubud region, Pura Samuan Tiga was commissioned in the 10th century by King Chandrasangka Warmadewa and served as the royal temple of the ancient Warmadewa dynasty. Its name means “temple of three meetings” in the local dialect; according to Balinese belief, this was the meeting place of the deities, gods and saints. The temple is flanked by the Pande and Tegending rivers and shaded by sacred banyan trees.
While most Balinese temples have three courtyards, Pura Samuan Tiga has seven, divided by walls with split gates. The innermost courtyard, reserved as the meeting place of the gods, is reached by climbing a stone staircase, and eight smaller temples surround the main complex, each in a slightly different style. It remains an active place of worship, hosting many rituals through the year, including Siyat Sampian and Sanghyang Jaran, in which devotees stage mock battles with coconut-leaf weapons.
The temple stands about five kilometres from Ubud, within easy reach of Goa Gajah and the rock reliefs of Yeh Pulu.
