How to Get to Pong
Pong (in Phayao province) is reached by road from Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai airports or by intercity bus. Shared minivans and local songthaews handle short transfers from provincial bus stations into village centres.
Chiang Rai (Mae Fah Luang) International Airport (CEI): The closest major airport for Pong (Phayao province) is Chiang Rai Airport; from there it’s a road journey of roughly 1-2 hours depending on your exact destination in Phayao province. Taxis and minivans operate from the airport to provincial towns.
Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX): Chiang Mai is a larger hub with more frequent flights; land travel from Chiang Mai to Phayao/Phayao‑area towns typically takes 2-3 hours by bus or car and is often used when direct Chiang Rai connections are limited.
Train: There is no direct rail link to Pong/Phayao - the northern railhead is Chiang Mai and onward travel to Phayao is by road.
Bus / minivan: Intercity buses and shared minivans connect Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai with Phayao town; travel times are about 1.5-3 hours depending on origin. Local songthaews and tuk‑tuks handle last‑mile trips from the bus station to smaller villages like Pong.
