How to Get to Dok Khamtai
Dok Khamtai (Phayao province area) is normally reached by road from regional airports (Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai) or by long-distance bus from Bangkok. The town is best connected by bus/minivan services rather than direct rail.
Chiang Rai (CEI) / Chiang Mai (CNX) / Bangkok (BKK/DMK): Dok Khamtai is best reached via regional airports at Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai or via Bangkok with onward overland travel. From Chiang Rai airport a road transfer to Dok Khamtai takes around 1-2 hours by car; from Bangkok expect 6-8 hours by road or a combination of flight + overland.
Local airfields: There are no commercial flights directly to Dok Khamtai; the regional airports above are the practical gateways.
Train: Northern and northeastern SRT lines serve Chiang Rai/Phayao region indirectly; Dok Khamtai is primarily served by regional bus links rather than a busy rail station. Check SRT for services to nearby larger towns and connect by road.
Bus / Minivan: Intercity buses and minivans from Chiang Rai, Phayao and Chiang Mai run to Dok Khamtai and nearby towns. Travel times vary: from Chiang Rai ~1-2 hours; from Chiang Mai or Bangkok considerably longer. Minivans are common and usually faster than scheduled buses.
