Pindaya City
Hill town in Shan State known for its limestone caves and pagodas
Pindaya’s caves hold thousands of lacquered Buddha images stacked in niches; travelers also rent boats on the lake, visit umbrella workshops and hike to village viewpoints for valley views.
Why Visit Pindaya?#
Set among Shan tea gardens, Pindaya is best known for the Pindaya Caves, a labyrinth of grottoes filled with thousands of Buddha images. The town’s paper-umbrella workshops and lacquerware studios showcase local crafts, and Shan specialties such as lahpet thoke (tea-leaf salad) make the food as memorable as the landscape. Many visitors prize Pindaya for its peaceful rural atmosphere and nearby walking routes through emerald hills.

How to Get to Pindaya#
Pindaya (Shan State) is most conveniently reached via Heho Airport, then by road for the final leg. The village is in a hilly area, so on-the-ground transfers (shared minibus or private taxi) are the practical choice; there is no direct rail service.
Heho Airport (HEH): Heho is the closest airport for Pindaya and receives domestic flights from Yangon and Mandalay; flight time from Yangon is about 1 hour. From Heho airport you can reach Pindaya by shared minibus or taxi - the road journey is roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on road conditions; expect to pay in the low thousands to mid-teens of thousands of kyat for shared or private transfers (prices vary; confirm locally).
Yangon International (RGN): If you arrive internationally at Yangon, the usual onward route is a domestic flight to Heho (preferred) or an overland bus via Taunggyi/Mandalay with multiple changes; overland travel from Yangon is long (often 10+ hours) and less comfortable.
Train: There is no regular intercity passenger rail service directly to Pindaya; Myanmar’s rail network does not serve this hill area for routine tourist travel.
Bus / Road: Regular minibuses and private car hires run between nearby towns (Taunggyi, Heho) and Pindaya. Buses from Taunggyi or continuous coach services from larger hubs are the common option; journey times depend on route and stops but typically fall in the 1-3 hour range from regional centres.
How to Get Around Pindaya#
Best approach is a domestic flight into Heho then a road transfer to Pindaya. For short distances around the village, walking and motorbike taxis are convenient; for longer transfers book a minibus or private car in advance.
- Shared minibus / coach (6,000-15,000 MMK) - Shared minibuses run between Heho/Taunggyi and Pindaya; they are the most economical option for independent travellers. Seats fill quickly during peak tourist periods, so arrive early at the bus/coach station or ask your guesthouse to reserve a seat.
- Private taxi / car hire (20,000-45,000 MMK) - Private cars or taxis offer door-to-door service and are recommended if you have luggage, are in a small group, or are on a tight schedule. Drivers often wait at Heho airport; negotiate or confirm a rate in advance.
- Long-distance bus (from Yangon) (10,000-25,000 MMK) - Overland buses from Yangon to the Shan region are available but slow and involve transfers; most travellers prefer to fly to Heho then continue by road. Night buses can be an option for budget travellers.
- Motorbike taxi / local transport (1,000-4,000 MMK) - In Pindaya itself you can use motorbike taxis for short hops to caves, markets or viewpoints; fares are small but always agree the price before setting off.
- Walking - Pindaya village is compact; once you arrive most major sights (caves, lake, markets) are easily reached on foot.
