Inle Lake
Lake Highland lake with stilt villages and floating gardens
Inle Lake’s stilt villages and floating gardens host Intha fishermen who row with one leg; boat tours visit markets, weaving workshops and lakeside pagodas amid mountain-ringed water.
Inle Lake is a large freshwater lake in Myanmar’s Shan State, renowned for its floating villages, gardens and unique leg-rowing fishermen. The lake sits at roughly 880 meters elevation and covers an area of about 116 square kilometers.
The lake basin is home to the Intha people for centuries; a long-standing freshwater fishing and farming culture developed on the lake’s floating gardens. Modern tourism expanded from the late 20th century, centered on boat-based visits and local crafts.
Inle Lake lies in southern Shan State, accessible via the nearby town of Nyaung Shwe which serves as the main gateway for visitors and boat departures.

How to Get to Inle Lake #
Inle Lake is served via the nearby town of Nyaung Shwe; the nearest airport is Heho, from which shared vans, taxis or buses run to Nyaung Shwe - the drive takes around 1-1.5 hours depending on connections. From Nyaung Shwe the lake is reached by a short walk to the jetty and then by boat for exploring the lake and its villages.
Tips for Visiting Inle Lake #
- Take a private or small-boat early-morning trip from Nyaung Shwe to catch the fishermen's leg-rowing and the calm reflections before wind and tourist traffic rise.
- Stay overnight in Nyaung Shwe rather than doing a single-day push from elsewhere; that lets you start very early and visit quieter southern lake villages and the Indein pagoda cluster at off-peak times.
- Hire a boatman who will vary the itinerary (floating gardens, small stilt-village alleys, Phaung Daw Oo) instead of following the standard loop-this gives better opportunities for less-crowded stops and local encounters.
