Oub Kham Museum at a Glance#
This museum lies outside the city centre but is well worth the trip, particularly combined with the Mae Fah Luang Arts and Cultural Centre, as they lie in the same direction and both focus on Lanna, or Northern Thai, heritage.
The oub kham itself is a golden bowl once used by members of the royal family, just one of many unusual artefacts on display alongside royal court costumes. The collection was assembled by Julasak Suriyachai, a local art connoisseur who, realising that most of the Lanna Kingdom’s valuable historical items were held in museums abroad, founded the Lanna Heritage Society and began the collection that grew into this museum.
The building housing the museum is itself a striking example of Lanna architecture, adding greatly to the authenticity of the experience.
