This centre is well worth visiting, especially if you are planning to go trekking and would like to learn how to identify the different hill tribes by their dress and something of their way of life.
Displays cover the various tribes’ clothing and artefacts, and there is an interesting slide show lasting about 20 minutes. The centre also runs treks in the area, which you can enquire about here or via its website. On the second floor, a handicrafts shop sells mostly clothing and bags made from colourful textiles, tempting you with a souvenir of your visit.
Open since 1976, the centre is run by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA). Where the local hill tribes once had high infant and maternal mortality rates, medical supplies and quality of life have since improved, so the centre serves a dual role, informing visitors about hill-tribe life while helping the tribes improve their own health and wellbeing. Right next door is the excellent Cabbages & Condoms restaurant, also run by the PDA, a convenient lunch stop while sightseeing.
