O Smach is a remote border town in Cambodia’s smallest province, sitting opposite Thailand’s Si Saket Province. For most travellers, the border crossing itself is the only reason to pass through, and there is little in the way of tourist infrastructure beyond it. The town’s couple of casinos draw a trickle of gamblers, but few visitors stay overnight.

From O Smach it is a short hop to Anlong Veng, the town where many Khmer Rouge leaders were based from the late 1970s until they were arrested or died. Pol Pot lived and died here, and the former homes and graves of the regime’s leaders have become the region’s main points of interest for those seeking insight into this dark chapter of Cambodian history.

The surrounding countryside is attractive but still riddled with land mines, so wandering off the roads is unwise. One safe exception is the route up into the Dangrek Mountains, which is lined with abandoned tanks left behind by the Khmer Rouge. Travellers bound for Siem Reap can arrange onward transport at the border, though scams and inflated fees are common, so it pays to know the official rates in advance.

As a border town, this place draws travelers interested in cross-border trade, local markets and offbeat regional stops between Cambodia and Thailand. Small casinos and busy frontier markets create a practical gateway atmosphere, while Khmer dishes such as fish amok can be found alongside Thai-influenced street food. Traditional performances and friendly market bargaining give visitors insight into everyday borderland life.

Few travellers linger in O Smach itself, but the surrounding northwest holds some genuinely absorbing stops. A short distance away lies Anlong Veng, the town where many senior Khmer Rouge leaders were based from the late 1970s and where their former homes and graves now draw visitors seeking to understand that chapter of Cambodian history.

The road climbing into the nearby Dangrek Mountains is safe to travel and still littered with abandoned tanks left behind by the Khmer Rouge. Be aware, though, that the wider countryside remains mined in places, so stick to established roads and tracks.

O Smach follows Cambodia’s monsoon rhythm: the cool dry season (Nov-Feb) is the most comfortable for travel and border crossings. The late dry heat and wet monsoon require planning around heavy rains.

O Smach is a border town in northwest Cambodia best reached overland from Siem Reap or - less commonly - Phnom Penh. There are no direct passenger trains; buses, minivans and private taxis provide the practical onward connections to the border.

The practical approach is to arrive at Siem Reap and take a bus/minivan or private taxi overland - minivans are cheapest and fastest for group travel, taxis for speed and convenience.
