Short, intense rains break up otherwise pleasant days; good for lower prices and lush scenery, but carry waterproof gear and expect afternoon downpours.
Dry Season
June - February · 12-26°C (54-79°F)

How to Get to Nyeri

Nyeri is reached most easily by road from Nairobi; the nearest major international airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, while domestic flights land at Wilson (WIL) and nearby Nanyuki Airport (NYK). There's no direct passenger train to Nyeri - most visitors transfer from Nairobi by coach, matatu or private car.

By Air

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO): Jomo Kenyatta is the main international gateway for central Kenya. From NBO you can take a private taxi or airport transfer directly to Nyeri (road journey roughly 3-4 hours) - expect about KES 8,000-15,000 for a private taxi/car hire one-way. If you prefer cheaper options, take a taxi or shuttle into Nairobi city (KES 400-1,000 to the city centre, ~30-60 minutes depending on traffic) and then a coach or matatu to Nyeri (see bus section) - coaches typically cost around KES 400-800 and take about 3-4 hours from Nairobi.

Wilson Airport (WIL) / Nanyuki Airport (NYK): Wilson is Nairobi’s domestic airport with scheduled flights and charters to Nanyuki (airlines such as Safarilink operate these routes). Flight time Wilson→Nanyuki is ~30-40 minutes; one-way fares for scheduled domestic flights commonly range from KES 6,000-12,000 depending on season and carrier. From Nanyuki town to Nyeri by road is roughly 1.5-2.5 hours; expect taxi or shuttle transfers of about KES 2,000-5,000 one-way, with cheaper local matatus/coaches available for lower fares (approx. KES 300-800).

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Nyeri. The nearest national rail hub is Nairobi (Nairobi Terminus / Syokimau for the SGR and Nairobi Railway Station for older services). Long-distance travellers coming by train (for example the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR) should disembark in Nairobi and continue to Nyeri by road. SGR trains link Mombasa and Nairobi (useful if arriving from the coast); from Nairobi you then take a coach or matatu to Nyeri (see bus paragraph).

Bus / Matatu: Regular inter‑county coaches and matatus run between Nairobi and Nyeri and serve Nyeri Bus Park/terminal in town. Coach companies and privately operated matatus depart from Nairobi and take approximately 3-4 hours depending on traffic. Fares are roughly KES 400-900 for standard coaches or matatus; premium shuttle services cost more. Within the region there are also shorter routes (e.g., Nanyuki-Nyeri) with fares of about KES 200-600 and travel times of 1.5-2.5 hours.

How to Get Around Nyeri

Nyeri is easiest to navigate by road: most visitors arrive via Nairobi then continue by coach, matatu or private transfer. For local mobility, short distances are handled best on foot or by boda‑boda, while taxis and shared shuttles are convenient for luggage or early/late connections. If you want speed and comfort, book a private transfer or a scheduled shuttle from Nairobi or Nanyuki.
