Karatina (Nyeri County) is best reached overland from Nairobi by intercity bus or matatu; there are no direct commercial flights into the town. Road travel is the practical, everyday option for visitors and locals alike.

By Air

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO): NBO is the main international gateway for central Kenya. From the airport you first reach Nairobi city centre (by shuttle/taxi), then matatus or intercity buses depart from Nairobi terminals to the central highlands; the road trip to Karatina typically takes around 3-4 hours by matatu or bus.

Nanyuki Airstrip (NYK) / Wilson (WIL) (charter/limited services): There are occasional domestic/charter flights into Nanyuki (airstrip) or Wilson Airport in Nairobi for small aircraft; from Nanyuki a road transfer to Karatina runs about 2-3 hours depending on route and stops.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is currently no regular passenger rail service directly serving Karatina; the main passenger rail (Madaraka Express) does not reach the town.

Bus / Matatu: Regular matatu and coach services run from Nairobi to Karatina via Thika/Marua. Departures are from Nairobi commuter and bus hubs; expect a 3-4 hour journey, with fares commonly in the KES 300-700 range depending on vehicle and operator.

Karatina’s centre is walkable, especially around the market and main streets.
