How to Get to Nsanje
Nsanje is reached predominantly by road from Blantyre (Chileka airport) and other Malawian hubs; domestic flights are limited. Minibuses and coaches are the practical, low-cost way in and out of town.
Chileka / Blantyre (BLZ): Chileka is the closest major airport serving southern Malawi. From Chileka to Nsanje expect a road journey of roughly 2-3 hours (depending on traffic and border checks) by minibus or private taxi. Shared minibuses (buses) are the cheapest option; private taxis are faster but much more expensive.
Kamuzu / Lilongwe (LLW): Lilongwe is farther north; travel to Nsanje by road takes much longer (5-7+ hours) and usually involves an overland bus or private transfer.
Train: Malawi’s passenger rail network is limited and does not reliably serve Nsanje for regular passenger travel.
Bus: Long-distance buses and minibuses (basilistas/chapas) run from Blantyre and other regional hubs to Nsanje and nearby towns. Buses from Blantyre generally take around 2-3 hours; fares are low (a few US dollars or equivalent MWK), while private minibuses or taxis cost more.
