How to Get to Chikwawa#
Chikwawa in southern Malawi is reached primarily by road from Blantyre (Chileka Airport) or via long inland journeys from Lilongwe. Public minibuses and regional coaches are the normal public options; a hired car is convenient for more remote travel.
Chileka International Airport (BLZ) / Blantyre: Chikwawa is in southern Malawi; the closest major airport with international flights is Chileka (Blantyre) or Lilongwe’s Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) further north. From Blantyre the road journey to Chikwawa is around 2-3 hours (taxi or bus), while from Lilongwe it is significantly longer by road (6+ hours).
Blantyre (domestic connections): Domestic flights into Blantyre are the more practical option for southern Malawi; onward travel to Chikwawa is by bus or hired vehicle with journey times of a few hours and fares varying by operator.

- Regional bus / coach (MWK 1,000-5,000) - Coach services and larger buses connect Blantyre with Chikwawa; these are more comfortable for longer journeys than minibuses. Schedules can vary and roads may be affected by weather - allow extra time in the wet season.
- Minibus / matatu (MWK 200-1,500) - Minibuses provide frequent, low-cost trips between towns but can be crowded and have less predictable departure times. They are the cheapest way to travel regionally and are widely used by locals.
- Taxi / private hire (MWK 5,000-25,000) - Taxis or private drivers offer door-to-door transfers from Blantyre or other hubs and are valuable for groups or when schedules are tight. Negotiate or confirm the fare before travel.
- Car hire / self-drive (USD 50-120/day) - Hiring a 4x4 or suitable vehicle from Blantyre gives flexibility to visit wildlife reserves and remote parts of the region; fuel and rental costs vary, and roads to some attractions may be rough.
