Northern Range

Mountains Mountain range across Trinidad's northern spine

Trinidad’s Northern Range offers rainforest hikes, waterfalls and birdwatching near Port of Spain; trails access ridge viewpoints, small villages and biodiversity hotspots for guided natural-history trips.

The Northern Range is a mountain chain running along the northern edge of Trinidad. It contains the island’s highest terrain and supports montane rainforest, cloud forest pockets, and a number of rivers and waterfalls.

Peaks in the range include El Cerro del Aripo and El Tucuche, both near 940 metres in elevation and prominent local landmarks. The range is important for biodiversity, freshwater catchments and recreational hiking.

Geographically the range rises directly from the north coast of Trinidad and extends east-west across the island’s northern third, forming a distinct upland zone above coastal plains and communities.

  • Ecology and hydrology: hosts Trinidad's principal highland rainforest and is the source of several short rivers and waterfalls that drain the northern slopes
  • Access: forms the northern backbone of Trinidad and is accessible by roads and trails from coastal towns to the north and south
