Queen's Park Savannah

Queen’s Park Savannah is a large urban open space in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. It functions as the city’s principal public park and communal gathering area.

The park covers roughly 260 acres (about 105 hectares) and provides expansive lawns, tree-lined drives, and open perimeter roads used for jogging, informal sports, and large public events. Along the western edge visitors can see the cluster of colonial-era mansions known locally as the Magnificent Seven; a major cricket ground, the Queen’s Park Oval, sits adjacent to the lawn and hosts high-profile matches. The Emperor Valley Zoo occupies part of the park and offers family-oriented exhibits and animal enclosures.

The Savannah developed during the colonial period as a communal open space and was later surrounded by residential and civic buildings; many of the mansions and sporting facilities date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over time the area has become the focal point for national celebrations, sporting events, and public recreation.

The park lies in central Port of Spain, within easy walking distance of the downtown business district and major hotels. It is the dominant open space in the city and is bounded by urban neighborhoods on all sides.

• Carnival season: Carnival draws its largest outdoor crowds to the park each year, with band tents and events clustered on and around the Savannah during February or March.
• Best viewpoints: Western perimeter offers the best close-up views of the row of colonial mansions and photo opportunities, while the Oval and eastern promenades are good for sporting and wildlife viewing.

• Magnificent Seven: A group of seven large, architecturally distinct colonial-era houses that line the western edge of the Savannah and are locally known as a unified landmark.
• Queen’s Park Oval: A major cricket ground adjacent to the Savannah used for regional and international matches and a focal point for sporting events in Port of Spain.
• Emperor Valley Zoo: A city zoo located on the eastern side of the Savannah that houses native and introduced species and serves as an educational facility.

Queen’s Park Savannah is centrally located in Port of Spain and is within walking distance from many downtown hotels and the capital’s central business district. Taxis and minibuses (maxi-taxis) serve the area; it is a short drive from Piarco International Airport (about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic).

• Visit during Carnival season (typically February-March) to experience the park at the cultural peak - expect crowds and energetic street performers.
• Walk the perimeter at dawn for a peaceful view of the city skyline and for local runners' rituals.
