Arctic & Subarctic (Northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland)
Midnight sun and mild but changeable weather define June: cruise traffic is highest along Greenland’s fjords and in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and towns like Nuuk and Iqaluit experience continuous daylight. Temperatures are cool to mild; expect damp fog in fjords, still-cold ocean waters, and long daylight for hiking and whale-watching. Book Arctic cruises and guided trips well ahead - services are concentrated in this short season and insects can be heavy inland.
Pacific Coast & Western Mountains (Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Yukon south, California coast, Cascades, Sierra, Rockies foothills)
By July the coast and interior valleys diverge: coastal cities (Vancouver, San Francisco) enjoy mild, comfortable weather with cool nights, whereas inland areas including Sacramento, central Oregon and parts of the Rockies heat up. Wildfire smoke becomes a real possibility late summer, occasionally reducing air quality and visibility for mountain hikes. Book summer accommodation early and carry water, sun protection and contingency plans for smoky days.
Southwest US & Northern Mexico (Baja California, Sonoran & Chihuahuan Deserts, Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico states)
Humidity rises with the onset of the North American monsoon in June in many interior locations: late afternoon thunderstorms become common in Arizona, New Mexico and northern Mexico, bringing dramatic lightning, brief heavy rains and localized flash floods. Daytime temperatures are high; storms provide short relief but also complicate canyon hikes and desert roads. Check road conditions after storms and avoid dry washes during and after heavy rain.
Great Plains & Midwest (Canadian Prairies, US Plains & Midwest: Saskatchewan, Manitoba, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri)
June brings long warm days and the start of the summer growing season: corn and soy fields tower across Iowa and Illinois while North Dakota and Saskatchewan show vast green landscapes. Thunderstorms are frequent and can become severe, particularly in the Plains, so outdoor plans should have contingency options. Mosquitoes and biting flies increase near wetlands and lakes, and festivals and fairs begin to fill weekends.
Northeast & Atlantic Canada (New England, Quebec, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick)
Long, warm days dominate June, and the coast and cities become busy - Boston’s harbor and the Gulf of St. Lawrence see more recreational traffic as ferries and whale tours run frequently. Early summer festivals and outdoor markets attract visitors, while higher elevations in the Laurentians stay refreshingly cool. Pack a light jacket for coastal evenings and book accommodations early for popular coastal drives and island visits.
Southeast US, Gulf Coast, Caribbean & Central America (Florida, Gulf states, Yucatán, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles)
June marks the start of hurricane season (June-November) and the beginning of more regular afternoon storms across Central America and the Caribbean - heavier downpours and increased humidity become the norm. The Gulf and Florida coasts warm considerably; beach days are still common, but tropical systems can form in the Atlantic or off the Yucatán. Purchase travel insurance for high-season storms and follow local weather advisories.
