Mediterranean Coast (northern Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia, coastal Libya, northern Egypt)
By May seaside towns are warm and gardened boulevards bloom; Casablanca, Algiers and Tunis reliably push into the low to mid-20s Celsius and Alexandria warms up. The Mediterranean is pleasant for swimming at sheltered spots and coastal roads are lively; major hotels begin to fill but the huge August surge hasn’t arrived. Plan morning visits to archaeological sites before the sun becomes strong and expect coastal breezes to keep heat manageable.
Atlas & Rif Highlands (Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia)
Early summer brings dry, clear weather across the highlands: June is warm in the lower Atlas foothills and comfortably cool on mountain passes, making it ideal for trekking without the midsummer heat of Marrakech. Mountain refuges open and mule tracks are busy; booking ahead for popular routes is advisable. Nights are cool enough to need a light sleeping bag at altitude.
Sahara Desert & Oases (Western Sahara, Mauritania, southern Morocco, southern Algeria, southern Libya, Egyptian Western Desert)
By May the Sahara is heating markedly: daytime readings across central dunes and plateaus frequently exceed 35°C, and shade becomes rare outside settlements. Nights are mild but not cool; long overland drives are best undertaken at dawn to avoid mechanical strain on vehicles. Many tour operators wind down peak desert trekking during the height of the heat, making late spring a less comfortable choice for extensive crossings.
Nile Valley & Delta (Egypt - Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan)
May marks the onset of hot, dry conditions: Cairo moves into consistently warm weather and Luxor begins approaching summertime extremes; water-based activities and shaded mid-day rests become important. Tourist numbers drop in the hottest weeks, making this a quieter time for major sites if you can handle the heat. Lightweight clothing and constant hydration are non-negotiable.
Red Sea Coast & Eastern Desert (Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, eastern Libya/Cyrenaica coast)
May often heats up substantially on the coast: daytime highs climb into the high 20s and low 30s, and reef conditions remain favorable for diving though surface heat increases. Resorts become busier with international holiday travel beginning, particularly shore-based dive tourism. Book dive trips a few days in advance and plan morning dives to avoid the hottest water surface temperatures.
