Mediterranean Coast (northern Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia, coastal Libya, northern Egypt)
Late spring brings warm, dry weather to the entire coast: April sees comfortable high teens to low twenties in Rabat and Tunis and pleasant sea breezes along the Libyan and Egyptian shore. Tourist towns start filling but beaches remain far from peak levels; it’s an excellent month for sightseeing and coastal drives, though occasional Saharan dust haze can reduce visibility. Pack light layers and sun protection - sunscreen and a hat are useful even if mornings are cool.
Atlas & Rif Highlands (Morocco, northern Algeria, Tunisia)
Late spring is the prime hiking season: April and May offer long, dry days on Mid-Atlas plateaus and stunning wildflowers on trails around Toubkal and the Djebel Zaghouan. Temperatures at altitude remain cool; daytime highs in mountain villages hover in the teens to low twenties while nights are chilly. It’s an excellent time for multi-day treks, but bring layered clothing and expect some lingering snow on the highest approaches in April.
Sahara Desert & Oases (Western Sahara, Mauritania, southern Morocco, southern Algeria, southern Libya, Egyptian Western Desert)
April often brings strong, hot winds and occasional sandstorms that can close desert tracks - the infamous khamsin or simoom events are most likely from mid-March into May. Oases such as Siwa and Ghat remain attractive but check local advice regarding wind and road conditions. Travel early in the day, carry extra water, and be ready for sudden changes in visibility and dusty conditions.
Nile Valley & Delta (Egypt - Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan)
April sees rapidly rising heat in the south - day temperatures in Luxor can reach the low 30s - while Cairo and Alexandria are warm and sunny. The likelihood of khamsin dust storms increases; these are short-lived but can cause reduced visibility and gritty conditions. Travelers on river cruises should expect warm, dry days and should avoid strenuous midday activity in Upper Egypt.
Red Sea Coast & Eastern Desert (Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, eastern Libya/Cyrenaica coast)
April brings hot, dry days with water temperatures comfortable for longer snorkel swims; inland deserts behind the coast heat earlier, so resort towns are a popular escape. Visibility underwater is superb and marine life is predictable, making April excellent for diving courses and liveaboard departures. Afternoon sea breezes help temper the heat, but sun protection for daytime excursions is vital.
