National Art Gallery, Bulgaria Museum

The National Art Gallery of Bulgaria is the country’s principal public institution for visual art and is located in Sofia. It holds the national collection of Bulgarian painting, sculpture and decorative arts across multiple periods.

The gallery’s displays range from medieval and ecclesiastical works through to modern and contemporary Bulgarian art. Exhibition rooms are arranged within a historic central building in Sofia that houses major works from the national collection.

The institution was formed through state collection and consolidation of fine art holdings and functions as the principal national repository for Bulgaria’s visual-art heritage. It organizes temporary exhibitions, conservation and research activities.

The gallery sits in central Sofia within the city’s administrative area and cultural core.

From central Sofia, walk from Serdika metro station (Lines M1/M2) roughly 8-12 minutes along Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard toward Knyaz Alexander I Square. Taxis and bus routes that stop near the square are frequent.

• Enter through the former Royal Palace courtyard (the main entrance off Knyaz Alexander I Square) - the steps still show scuff marks from carriage wheels.
• Visit late afternoon on weekdays to avoid school groups and catch warmer light on the 19th-century Bulgarian portraits.
• Look for the 19th-century icon by Zahari Zograf in the Bulgarian Revival galleries - a small plaque tells the painter's story.
