National Archaeological Museum (Sofia) is Bulgaria’s principal state museum for archaeological collections located in Sofia. It holds material spanning prehistoric, Thracian, Greek, Roman and medieval Bulgarian periods.

Exhibition highlights cover finds from Bulgaria’s prehistoric and ancient past including pottery, sculpture and carved stone monuments; displays also include material from Thracian and Roman sites. Galleries are arranged to show chronological development rather than a single type of object.

The museum grew from national collections assembled in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and has been expanded and reorganised over time to accommodate archaeological research and new finds.

The museum is located in central Sofia in the Sofia City Province and is part of the city museum network, within walking distance of other central cultural institutions.

The National Archaeological Museum in Sofia is in the city centre near Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. From Sofia’s central Serdika metro hub you can walk about 5-10 minutes to the museum; it is also served by numerous central-city buses and is a short drive from Sofia Central Railway Station (a couple of kilometres) along Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard.

• Arrive at opening on a weekday to avoid larger tour groups and school visits that commonly tour the museum later in the day.
• Prioritize the Thracian collections (including the major gold treasures) early in your visit, since these displays are the museum's highlights and get busiest.
