History & Culture of the Nan National Museum
Housed in the former residence of the Nan royal family, the museum is a must-see not only for its displays but for the superb craftsmanship of the wooden building itself. It was originally built in the early 1900s, and its main exhibits focus on the town’s history and architecture.
The collection. The centrepiece is a black elephant tusk about a metre in length, believed to hold mystical powers. Alongside it are locally sculpted Buddha images and other art objects, as well as anthropological displays on the minority peoples of the region, among them the Thai Lu, Htin and Mlabri, the last a small group of hunter-gatherers who live in the hills of Nan Province.
