Hikers should plan a full day and consider hiring a local guide at the trailhead.

- Start the ascent from Trawas before dawn - the climb to Penanggungan's summit is steep and is usually done as a long day-hike with many stone steps.
- Hire a local guide familiar with the dozens of ruined shrines (candi) - many sites are easy to miss among the scrub and terraces.
