About Mount Dempo

Mount Dempo is a stratovolcano in South Sumatra, Indonesia, rising to about 3,173 meters above sea level and ranked among the higher peaks on Sumatra.

Hiking routes ascend through forested lower slopes to open ridgelines near the summit; the peak offers wide views over surrounding agricultural plains and nearby settlements. Trails are used by local trekkers and can be steep in places, with changes in vegetation as elevation increases.

The volcano is of volcanic origin and has built the cone and highland on which nearby towns are situated; local communities use its slopes for agriculture and as access points for climbing.

Located in South Sumatra province, the mountain sits near the town of Pagar Alam in the Barisan mountain chain of southern Sumatra.
