About Matthias Church#
Matthias Church is a Roman Catholic church on Castle Hill in Budapest’s Vár district with medieval origins and a major late Gothic structure dating to the 14th century. The building is notable for its long history and prominent location beside the city ramparts.
The interior features neo-Gothic decoration from a late 19th century restoration and a patterned, ceramic-tiled roof that is visible across the Buda side of the river. The church includes chapels and richly decorated nave and altar areas used for services and concerts.
The site began as a medieval parish church and was substantially rebuilt in the Gothic period. It underwent a major restoration in the late 19th century carried out to revive Gothic elements after earlier alterations; it has also been adapted for different uses over the centuries, including during the Ottoman period.
The church stands on Castle Hill, adjacent to the Fisherman’s Bastion and within the Buda Castle area of Budapest, offering direct access to the castle district and panoramic views toward Pest.
- Roof tiles: The exterior roof uses colorful Zsolnay ceramic tiles, a distinctive late 19th century addition that is visible from surrounding viewpoints.
- Visiting note: The church contains a number of chapels and richly decorated interior spaces; combined visits with nearby viewpoints often use a single ticket.

Tips for Visiting Matthias Church#
- Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the big cruise and tour-bus crowds concentrated around Fisherman's Bastion and the church at midday; check the church's schedule because services can close the interior to tourists.
- Enter from Szentháromság (Holy Trinity) Square to access the main visitor entrance and buy combined tickets for the church interior and the tower if you want city views-the tower access is separate and can sell out during high season.
- Don't skip the Church Museum and the exhibits in the adjoining spaces-many visitors see only the richly decorated nave and miss the artifacts and historical displays explaining the building's layers.
